Carmen Selves is a spanish catalan oil painting artist. She is a daughter of Joan Selves, a journalist and a politician of the second spanish republic and Carmen Baltierrez, an amateur but very talented painter. Carmen Selves studied of art in Real School of Sant Jordi in Barcelona and was a disciple of other reputed painters like Evarist Bassiana. She began her career as a portrait painter. In the middle of the 20th century she married the enginner Josep Maria Vicente Esforzado and had four children. As she had to care children she keep painting but she participated only in a few art exhibitions from 1960 to 1990. In the nineties she continued in art exhibitions and publications. Could be said that she has at least three stages. From 1945 to 1965, she was a on demand portraitist, very realistic with an impressionist touch, later, more mature, up to 2008, she use a colorful free style. In the 21 century is a bit more symbolist. She did her first oil painter at 9 (1940) helped by her mother. First participated in an art exhibition in the church of San Josep de Manresa in 1945, thanks to the art critic and writer, Ferran Hurtado. At 2021, she continues painting.
