Alabama's statehood began in 1819 when it joined the Union as the 22nd state. Alabama was settled by eastern farmers looking to take advantage of fertile soil and bringing along slave labor. Alabama seceded during the civil war and joined the Confederate States of America in 1861. Following the war Alabama rejoined the Union and built a rich history it's residents and visitors enjoy today.

Alabama doesn't have an official state motto although it's commonly known as "the Heart of Dixie". The state is also known as the "Yellowhammer" state, a nickname given to some Alabama civil war soldiers with yellow cloth on their sleeves. Alabama is also referred to as "the Cotton State" although today it produces less than 10% of the countries cotton crop.

Alabama has several special sites for civil war enthusiasts. The first White House of the Confederacy is in Montgomery across the street from where Jefferson David took his oath of office as President of the Confederate States.

World War II enthusiasts should visit the Tuskegee Airman National Historic Site. This airfield is where aviators of color trained to fight the axis powers while serving in segregation.
