In the heart of the south, and big on its catfish production, Mississippi is sure to offer you a lot of old American culture. Native Americans founded the state thousands of years before Europeans set foot onto U.S. soil. Spanish, British, and French all made their way to Mississippi, and with them, slaves helped build the economy. The French lost Mississippi to Great Britain in the Treaty of Paris in 1763. Only twenty years later, Great Britain relinquished control of the state.
