New Zealand offers all the three grade education systems: primary, secondary and tertiary or higher education plans. Schooling is mandatory for children aged 5 through 16, while there are instances in which children start their education at 6 years of age. A total of 13 years of education are present in New Zealand, which do not include tertiary or higher education plans.

For tertiary education, New Zealand offers universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and specialist colleges.

Another kind of education named wānanga is responsible for Maori-oriented educational plans for the minority communities of Maori still present in the country. Reading, mathematics and science are the forte points of New Zealand, the country being ranked on the 7th place in terms of educational systems.

More than half the population between 15 and 29 years of age has a tertiary education degree. 99% of people in the country are literate, even though only 14% of adults have a higher degree of education, while 22% have no formal education whatsoever. 30% of adults only have a secondary education program finished.
